Over the years the number of Office 365 plans has evolved in equal measure to the amount of productivity tools within. It’s not surprising then that with the recent launch of Microsoft 365 – an entirely different product – companies are confused about what the plans contain and what’s best for their business.
So, what is Office 365, what is Microsoft 365, and why should I choose one over the other?
Office 365 – in brief
As a complete productivity suite, Office 365 provides a wide range of tools to help your business operate at its best, from email and calendars through to analytical services. With multiple plans available there’s something suitable for every type and size of business.
Microsoft 365 – in brief
Microsoft 365 contains the full Office 365 productivity suite, plus the additions of Enterprise Mobility and Security (EM+S) and Windows 10. Microsoft 365 was built on the foundations of Office 365 and is designed for the modern workforce. As a package, it provides additional security features to ensure that working remotely or by mobile device doesn’t mean sacrificing security.
Why Office 365?
The majority of companies have grown with Office 365, but still only know it for email and Office apps. These organisations often use the Business Essentials or E1 plans (Email and Office web apps), depending on their number of seats.
Other organisations have realised that there’s much more to Office 365 than PowerPoint, Word, Excel and emails: they’ve recognised the depth of productivity features available. The Business Centre for example, provides features that enable smaller businesses to operate efficiently and grow successfully. As an example, Microsoft Invoicing allows the easy creation of professional looking invoices and the ability to track payments, whilst Bookings allows customers to schedule, cancel, and rearrange appointments with you or your colleagues.
Outside of the Business Centre is Power BI Pro which provides you with insights into your data far beyond Excel, allowing you to understand your business in new and complex ways, and also create live up to the second graphs and insights.
With real depth of productivity products and multiple plans available, there’s something suitable for every type and size of business.
Why Microsoft 365?
Microsoft 365 is built on the foundation of Office 365, incorporating two additional products to fulfil companies’ security needs. Organisations that work on multiple devices and on the go, need additional features to enable them to maintain high levels of security outside of their office space.
Microsoft 365 Business has the productivity tools of Office 365, the security features of EM+S, and the additional bonus of Windows 10 Business.
EM+S contains five different products that ensure that staff are working securely inside and outside the office. Intune keeps employees’ work and personal spaces separate on mobile devices, ensuring security and control without being invasive. Azure AD is identity management with ‘Single Sign-on’ so users only need one set of login credentials. Advanced Threat Analytics identifies patterns of users’ behaviour in order to spot suspicious behaviour. Azure Information Protection allows you to classify and label documents and emails, track who’s viewed them, and rescind access. Cloud App Security is an App management tool to analyse and control app usage and identify risks with ease.
Windows 10 Enterprise has a number of additional features compared to Windows 10 Pro. Device guard protects your devices from malware whilst App-V ensures that all apps are patched and updated.
With a depth of productivity and security tools on offer, Office 365 and Microsoft 365 provide a balance between freedom and control.
